Description for altar:

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican cultural holiday that is celebrated from the night of Oct 31st to November 2nd. Mexicans believe that the spirits of their loved ones that have passed away come to visit the family over the 3 day period. Families create altars with their loved one’s favourite foods, candles, traditional Day of the Dead bread and marigolds.

Description of the student work:

In Spanish 9, we watched a movie called The Book of Life which is the first Mexican produced movie that revolves around the theme of the Day of the Dead. Using the movie and what the students learned from their unit (the verb to be and adjectives), the students needed to describe one of the characters from the movie. La Catrina is a very famous image that is related to the Day of the Dead.
