The Cariboo Hill Senior Girls Basketball team just got back from their trip to Cuba. The girls were there during the death and subsequent 9 days of mourning for Cuba’s Fidel Castro. Although these national restrictions did alter the team’s schedule quite a bit, the girls continued to have an excellent and somewhat surreal cultural and sports experience.
Our Cariboo team was trained and coached by the Cuban National Coaching program. They were buddied with a Cuban athlete of similar age to train with for the week – with both teams working through the language barriers through the common language of basketball. Our girls made good and deep friendships instantly with these hard working national athletes.
In our time off the court, our girls enjoyed tours of Old Havana, Revolution Square, historical sites and areas, and enjoyed the beach and warm weather. On several occasions, we hosted the team back at our hotel, sharing meals, pool parties and dance lessons with each other. Our extensive fund-raising and donation gathering allowed us to put together donation bags for each athlete and coach, as well as to make a sizeable donation to a local inner-city Havana community centre. Our girls went well above what was asked of them, and many donated much of their own personal clothes and shoes to their new friends too. Our bags were very light for the return trip home!
The whole Cariboo community should be very proud of our Sr. Girls Basketball team. They represented both Cariboo, and Canada to the highest level of international diplomacy. They conducted themselves with grace, patience, humility and deep respect for the duration of our trip.
Congrats on an excellent experience, Chargers!
Canada-Cuba amigas por siempre!
