Our aim in the Home Economics department is to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that have immediate and future applications to their personal and family lives. The Home Economics curriculum draws upon knowledge from many disciplines and uses the experiences and needs of students to make learning meaningful in both personal and family contexts. At each grade level, a variety of courses is offered to meet the needs of all students at Cariboo Hill..

HOME ECONOMICS 8

HOME ECONOMICS 8 (Part of the ADST rotation)
 This course provides an introduction to foods, nutrition, clothing, textiles, and consumerism. The course is open to all grade 8 students and is divided into:

  • A food section where students learn basic nutrition and food preparation principles
  • A clothing section where students learn basic sewing skills to operate a sewing machine

FOOD STUDIES

FOOD STUDIES 10
 An introductory course to develop an interest in food preparation. The focus is on nutritious meals. Basic and pratical skills are developed, enabling students to continue towards senior-level courses.

FOOD STUDIES 11/12
 No prerequisites
This course is designed for students who possess basic food preperation and planning skills and wish to advance them. An advanced course in food preperation with emphasis on gourmet and muticultural food preparation, the emphasis is on individualized work. Students choose their own recipies with guidance from the teacher.

Advance Catering 12
 Students prepare a variety of dishes for meetings and functions within the school as well as units on menu planning, painishes etc.

TEXTILE STUDIES

Mixed class with students at different levels.

HOME ECONOMICS 10
 A pratical introduction to sewing through a variety of projects. Topics include the study of fabric use and care, how to select colours that suit you, and successful wardrobe planning.

TEXTILE STUDIES 11
 This is a practical, hands on course which has been approved as a dual credit course. It meets the requirements of both Applied Skills and Fine Arts. Through the completion of practical projects, the student will be able to create a well coordinated wardrobe, accessory and a quilt or other craft.

TEXTILE STUDIES 12
 This course is designed for senior clothing students who want to broaden their sewing experiences and express themselves more creatively through their clothing.

FAMILY STUDIES

FAMILY STUDIES 11/12
 During the year we will cover two of the following modules (picked by the students):

 
  • Child Developement and parenting:
 Responsibilities, guidance/discipline, adoption, rights of children.
 
  • Adolescence:
 Transition, identity, developement, effective communiciation, issues/challenges.
 
  • Adulthood:
 Transition, stages, lifestyle and life changes, issues/challenges, stages.
 
  • Families in society:
 Challenges, changing world, living in a family, history, roles, rules.
 
  • Interpersonal and Family Relationships:
 Forming, commited, changes, communication, wellness/safety, conflict resolution.
 
  • Housing and Living Enviroments:
 Independent living, counsemer housing, housing/society.
